FAQs

How much does therapy cost? Is it covered by insurance?

The cost of a 50 minute session is $125, payable by check or cash on the day of your visit. Efrem is also an in-network provider for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Health Care and Tufts Health Plan. If you would like to use your insurance to pay for your visits, you may wish to ask the following questions of your insurance provider:

  • Do I have a deductible for in-network coverage and how much is it?

  • How much is my co-pay for each visit?

  • Is there a limit on the number of sessions my plan covers in a year?

Efrem can help you sort out insurance issues. If you do not have insurance that covers psychotherapy, you will be expected to make payment on the day of your session. Efrem will bill your insurance for you, if applicable, and you will be reimbursed by your insurance company, usually within a week.

What happens on the first visit?

Before the first meeting, you will be emailed a portal to complete some forms that are required by state law or for insurance. We are located in the old Narragansett Pier Railway Station in Peace Dale at 43 Railroad Street, on the second floor. Use the ample free parking behind the building (including bicycle parking – we are on the William O’Neill Bicycle Path). Enter through the door adjacent the parking lot, and come to the second floor waiting room.

We are two blocks off of the RIPTA bus #66 route. Get off at the rotary in the Peace Dale Historic District where Kingstown Road (Rte. 108) meets High Street.  http://www.ripta.com/66

Which kind of therapy is best for me?

Imago. Emotionally Focused. Psychodynamic. Cognitive. Interpersonal. Experiential. There are currently over 500 types of therapy. All have some validity. Not all types treat each condition with equal effectiveness. Most therapists describe themselves as ‘integrative’ because therapists must adapt theory to treat the person in front of them. Research shows that after controlling for relevant factors, it is the strength of the relationship with your therapist that is the best predictor of a successful outcome.

How do I choose a therapist?

You may not feel comfortable working with someone due to their gender, age, ethnicity, accent, or appearance. Perhaps the connection doesn’t feel right for reasons that you do not understand. Selecting a therapist is not an equal opportunity process. You are going on a journey where you must open yourself in ways that may be uncomfortable, fearful, angry, joyful, challenging, redemptive and hopefully enlightening. Trust your gut and be willing to start over with someone else if things don’t work out with your first contact.

How long does therapy take?

Symptom relief varies with the problem. Often 5-8 sessions is enough to achieve significant relief of symptoms for clients who otherwise have adequate resources and a mostly fulfilling life. Efrem’s approach is generally short-term and solution focused. Therapy is not an all-or-nothing process; feelings and attitudes evolve over time and some time and personal space maybe required to bring awareness to our ingrained habits.
